What is Energy Deregulation?
Before 1998, one utility provided all parts of your energy service: generation, transmission, and distribution. With deregulation, generation is separated from transmission and distribution. Consumers can choose their energy supplier, while the delivery of the energy is still the responsibility of the local utility company.
Electricity deregulation is available in 17 states across the United States.
What Does Energy Deregulation Mean for Me?
With deregulation you can:
- Save money on your monthly energy bills. Unlike your utility, we can buy energy in bulk and pass the savings along to you.
- Opt for green energy. Decrease your carbon footprint while maintaining affordability and reliability.
- Avoid service interuptions. Deregulation only affects the supply of energy, not its distribution or delivery channels.

Will I have an interruption in service when I switch?
No! Since your power will still flow through the utility, there will be no interruption in service.
Do I have to call my utility company or current electricity provider to switch?
No! We will notify your utility, and if needed, they will notify your current electricity provider.
Do I have to pay two separate bills?
No! Bills will still come from the utility, and CenStar energy will be a line item on the bill. The utility will continue to read and service your meter.
How long does the switch take?
For electric customers: on your next meter-reading date, if you are enrolled at least 15 days before that date.
For gas customers: on the 1st calendar day of the following month, if you are enrolled by the 15th of the previous month.
During enrollment, we take care of everything! You’ll just need to keep an eye out for a letter from your utility with the final setup date.
What happens if my power goes out?
If your power goes out, you will need to call your utility. The utility reads your meter, handles service calls, and provides emergency assistance – you will continue to receive the same safe and reliable service from your utility.
Complete your enrollment today online and then…
Now you just wait for the confirmation letters to arrive from the utility and from us with details of the switch and expected start date. Terms of the agreement will be included with our letter. Remember if you change your mind, no worries! Just give us a call within 30 days and you can switch back to the utility without penalty.
